The heart pumps blood and after the blood is pumped out, it must flow in a particular direction. At times, after the blood is pumped out, it flows in the wrong direction and this condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation. In this condition, the blood flow goes in the backward direction and not in the other parts of your body.
If you suffer from mitral regurgitation, you will face shortness of breath, get tired immediately, and other issues. Besides, you will suffer from high BP as well as fluid buildup in your lungs too. Mitral regurgitation is not fatal only if you treat it at the right time. Hence, whenever you feel that you are running out of breath, make sure that you are consulting doctors.
Is mitral valve regurgitation fatal?
Mitral regurgitation is not a problem unless it is getting severe. While it is in the mild stage, it does not create any problem, but some complications might arise, and at times, it includes heart failure as well. Once your heart fails to pump enough blood and meet the requirement of your body, chances are there you might suffer from a heart attack. Due to this reason, it is always a good idea to opt for taking medical treatment in case you are suffering from mitral valve regurgitation.
Wrong path
The Mitral valve is normally a one-way passage as it has flaps that must close after sending blood to the left ventricle. However, at times, the valve fails to seal properly. This forces the blood to flow in the backward direction. If you keep facing this condition continuously, doctors will call it mitral valve disorder.
Causes of mitral valve regurgitation
Almost every person can suffer from mitral regurgitation and although it is not fatal, make sure that you are taking proper care so that it does not worsen further. One of the most common reasons behind mitral regurgitation is damage to the valve. Either this can occur after any major heart attack or it can be in-born. Heart attack causes the tissues around your heart to weaken. Some other causes that lead to mitral regurgitation are calcium buildup, rheumatic fever, a bacterial infection.
Complications you might face
If the regurgitation persists for long, it can cause blood clotting, and this can be a serious threat to your brain or lungs. Your body does not get enough blood, and to fill the shortfall, your heart will pump more blood. In this process, heart enlargement might occur, thus increasing the threat of heart attack.
Hence, if you take enough care on time, mitral regurgitation is not fatal. With the right medication and treatment, things can be brought under control.
